Who We Are

The Ghana Education project is a youth-run US non-profit organization dedicated to its motto, "Education is the Foundation of Freedom". This concept was developed by our founding members during their fledgling trip to Ghana in 1999. These six Princeton students felt that there were ways for volunteers to help in Africa that were not currently being explored, and so embarked on a program-building mission to add value to American volunteer-driven international development.

In the eight years since that initial excursion we have had the unique privilege of developing our organizational ideals in the field, with the constant feedback, criticism and encouragement of the communities and individuals with whom we live and work.

Since 1999 we have been led to the boats of fishermen, the bedsides of AIDS patients, the offices of ministers, the palaces of chiefs, the confidences of children. Today we are guided by a system of principles and partnerships which are the culmination of our experiences.

The GEP, informed by these experiences and partnerships, operates many different programs and partnerships, from our Summer Volunteer Program, to the Epidemic Prevention Vehicle initiative, to the Diaspora Showcase and more. We depend upon the help and support of the extended community that gives us both the spiritual and logistical support to keep chugging into the new century…
